In its first year of operation, the Mark W. Graham Foundation inaugurated the coveted “Character Award” at St. Thomas More High School, Mark’s alma mater. With the successful fundraising events this past year, in addition to the annual scholarship given at STM, the Mark W. Graham Foundation Character Award scholarship will be awarded to a senior at Teurlings Catholic High School and one for each of the Lafayette Parish public high schools.
The Character Award is designed to recognize a well-rounded young person whose contributions to his/her community may not be acknowledged by more traditional awards and provide him/her with financial assistance to achieve a dream.
This scholarship award evaluates recipients on their strength of character alone, regardless of academic or athletic achievement. The Mark W. Graham Foundation’s aim is to honor students whose lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to qualities associated with goodness.
These graduating seniors should exemplify the core values of character - caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and citizenship - and provide examples of being a positive role model for others.
Criteria:
Regardless of family background, race, financial status, academic achievement or physical condition, anyone can earn respect and admiration by being a person of character.
Nominations were be submitted by teachers, administration and staff from the students’ respective school and the winners from each school were selected by a scholarship committee.
